This tour was my favourite on my trip to Bali. It was great fun! If you are going to Ubud, you have to do this class. It started with a tour of the local night market and the family's beautiful property, then there was coffee and some sweets, and then the cooking. It was so interesting, fun, informative and DELICIOUS. I will definitely use what I learnt at home :) My friends are in for a treat at our next potluck!!
This was so interesting and well run. The trip to the market was great to see all the unusual foods and stalls. Everything was well explained and you could ask many questions. It was lovely to be welcomed into his home and see traditional Balinese life. The recipes were delicious and fun to cook. I would highly recommend this trip. No particular cookery experience required.
One of the highlights of our trip to Bali. The class was great. We learned about ingredients that went into typical Balinese cuisine and we made a meal consisting of five courses. What makes this class unique is that the chef/instructor, Nyoman Mahendra, holds it at his home compound that he shares with 40 extended family members. It was a bonus to get insight as to how Balinese people live. Needless to say, this class is highly recommended.
This was a fantastic trip from start to finish and a highlight of my stay in Bali. Nyoman, the chef took me to the local market in the early evening to tell me about their local produce and the food on offer to the locals at the market. We then went to his home where he made me feel very welcome and we cooked some amazing food. Thank you!
Our Chef Nyoman was fantastic! The dishes were delicious and we enjoyed the hands on learning! My 3 daughters had a fabulous time!
Thank you Nyoman for sharing your home and giving us a glimpse of Balinese life... priceless!
This class was one of the highlights of our trip! Nyoman, our chef took us to the local market and gave us a proper tour. We learned so much about the culture and local goodies for sale that otherwise, we would have not recognized.
Nyoman really loves what he does! He was so fun and passionate and full of information!
After our tour of the market he took us back to his home where he gave us a tour of the grounds and introduced us to his family and pet monkey who they rescued!
From there we made our way to their very nice kitchen equipped with about 12 cooking stations. We were lucky to have him all to ourselves however. Nyoman was totally hands off. While he guided us through every step, he let us do it all. We cooked 5 different dishes, all of which were delicious!!!!
This is really the best way to get to know Bali, its flavors, its culture, and its people! Your new skills and written recipes are the ultimate souvenire to bring home! Can't wait to cook for all of our friends.
This cooking class was absolutely mazing! Having the cooking school within his family compound creates a special experience. Definitely do the tour in the morning with the market, you get to go to a local, non-touristy market which amplifies the experience.
Great cooking class, Wayan's class was well taught very informative. I got to see how traditional Balinese food was prepared, from sauces to main dishes. Best part of the session? I got to eat all of the food! The ingredients were fresh and the class was very hands on. Highly recommended.
Great cultural knowledge and a charming chef
I went to this cooking class with a friend and we both really enjoyed it. The tour started with a trip to a local market where our guide explained the different spices and vegetables used in Balinese cooking. There was a local restaurant selling pieces cut from a freshly cooked suckling pig! The cooking class itself was held in an open air kitchen in a beautiful garden. It was very cool and clean. We had great fun with the hands on cooking and the food was just superb! This is an excellent tour and i have no hesitation in recommending it.
All prep work and cooking are hands-on experiences, performed by our students. Our courses (including for Vegetarian) are started with Payangan Traditional morning market, accompanied by the chef to take advantages of cooler out door temperature for shopping, preparing and coking. We learn about Balinese tastes and customs, local meat, fish, and other product, finding ingredients and unique way of bargaining in Balinese style. Touring a traditional out door market provides experiences how Balinese people spend their time before cooking. arrived at the compound house introducing some well grown herbs and spices in our extensive gardens. Students are thought to process the food with traditional utensils and techniques. Paste and sauce preparation is one of the most interesting and important aspects of Balinese cooking, with two types of way Balinese spice preparations, chopped on wooden chopping block and ground in a stone mortar before being cooked in a variety of ways of Balinese dish.
