The fortress was designated as Historical Monument Nº3 in January 1963, and on December 1997, it was also designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
The Suwon Hwaseong Palace is a temporary palace where the king and royal family retreated during a war. This is one of the largest palaces, used by the Joseon kings since the time of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800).
