Why go
A simple transport plan prevents unnecessary backtracking. The historic centre, market, waterfront and Postiguet Beach form a walkable core. Rail brings intercity travellers near the centre, the tram serves outer beaches and towns to the north, and boats turn Tabarca into a separate day on the water.
The full story
Alicante's compact centre makes walking the default for many visits. The railway station lies within the urban grid, while the old town, market, Explanada, marina and Postiguet Beach cluster closer to the waterfront. The airport is south of the city and requires a road connection into town. For journeys north along the coast, TRAM d'Alacant combines underground central stations with tram and tram-train services toward beaches and neighbouring towns. Regional and long-distance trains serve inland and intercity travel, while the bus station adds routes not covered conveniently by rail. Boats are a different category: Tabarca works as a sea outing rather than ordinary urban transport, so weather and the return schedule matter. Keep tickets until a journey is complete, and confirm current station, platform and service information through the relevant operator before leaving.
Useful to know
- Walk between the old town, Central Market, Explanada, port and Postiguet; save transport for outer districts.
- Use official journey planners for airport, rail and tram trips because routes, fares and timetables change.
- Check sea conditions and return sailings before committing to Tabarca or another boat connection.
