Why go
This overview helps decide what deserves a full visit and what works as connective scenery. Santa Bárbara Castle provides scale and views; MACA, MUBAG and MARQ supply focused collections; Santa María and Saint Nicholas reveal religious architecture; the waterfront ties the centre together without extra transport.
The full story
Begin with Alicante's physical structure. Santa Bárbara Castle crowns Mount Benacantil, and the slopes descend through La Ereta Park and Santa Cruz toward the old town. Below, the Basilica of Santa María stands across from MACA, creating a direct contrast between historic church architecture and modern art. The Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and Town Hall extend the architectural circuit through the central streets, while MUBAG adds 19th-century Spanish art inside Gravina Palace. MARQ sits farther from the waterfront and merits a dedicated block for archaeology from prehistory onward. At sea level, the tiled Explanada runs beside the marina, and the port promenade continues toward Postiguet Beach beneath the castle. These groups combine well, but not at the same pace. Use the castle for orientation, the old town for close detail and the waterfront for an easier final stretch.
