Why go
The Huerta Towers make most sense as a defensive landscape, not a single monument. Built to warn rural estates of pirate raids, the surviving structures reveal how vineyards, irrigation and coastal insecurity shaped the countryside northeast of Alicante over several centuries.
What to look for
- Individual towers vary in form, preservation and relationship to later buildings.
- The network once relayed warnings across estates vulnerable to raids from the coast.
- Traces of the huerta place the fortifications within an irrigated agricultural system.
Useful to know
- Reserve about four hours for the full 12.2-kilometre route.
- Treat tower interiors as private or uncertain unless access is clearly indicated on site.
- Walk in daylight and avoid the exposed route during intense heat or poor weather.
