Why go
Santa Cruz makes the old-town walk itself the experience. Steep turns reveal whitewashed houses, flowerpots and narrow lanes before the hermitage viewpoint opens across the old town, port and Mediterranean. The physical climb is part of the appeal and the main trade-off.
What to look for
- Whitewashed façades and dense flowerpots give each narrow stairway a different composition.
- The lanes rise sharply beneath Mount Benacantil and Santa Bárbara Castle.
- The hermitage viewpoint looks over the old town, harbour and open sea.
Useful to know
- Allow about an hour and wear shoes suited to steep, uneven steps.
- Start low in the old town and finish at the hermitage or continue uphill through La Ereta Park.
- Go earlier or later on hot days, as the climb can feel demanding in direct sun.
