Tossal de Manises – Lucentum
Walk the street plan, walls and layered remains of Alicante’s Roman predecessor above Albufereta, where Iberian and later Islamic layers deepen the story.
Lucentum rewards visitors who enjoy reading a city through foundations rather than monumental ruins. Streets, fortifications, baths and the forum reveal how the settlement worked, while Iberian layers and an early Islamic cemetery show that Tossal de Manises held meaning long beyond the Roman period.
What to look for
A defensive circuit roughly 600 metres long outlines much of the ancient urban area.
The surviving street grid helps locate the forum, baths and other parts of Roman civic life.
Earlier Iberian occupation and a later Islamic cemetery add visible depth to the Roman story.
Useful to know
Set aside 90 minutes or more; the site becomes clearer when followed slowly through its interpreted street plan.
Expect an exposed outdoor visit and bring protection from strong sun or unsettled weather.
Pair the ruins with MARQ if you want the excavated objects and wider archaeological context.
