Amalfi at the Mouth of the Ravine

Amalfi's tight setting between cliffs and sea helps explain both its compact centre and its history as a trading town. Begin with that geography before entering the cathedral.

Amalfi at the Mouth of the Ravine

Why go

The town gave the coast its name and was once the capital of the Duchy of Amalfi, a Mediterranean trading power. At the mouth of a deep ravine below Monte Cerreto, it had little room to spread inland. That setting makes Piazza Duomo, the shore and the rising streets feel closely connected when you walk through them.
