Why go
This mixed indoor-and-outdoor walk suits travelers interested in how Amalfi worked as a town, from handmade paper to seafaring. Begin at Museo della Carta in the valley behind the centre, then walk down to Fontana di Sant'Andrea in the cathedral square. Arsenale di Amalfi gives the waterfront a maritime counterpoint to the old paper mill: its vaulted shipyard and navigation exhibits make the town’s trading past tangible. Continue on foot to Atrani and San Salvatore de Birecto, a former palatine chapel where Amalfi’s dukes were crowned. The route is deliberately unhurried, with time for both museum visits and the short intertown walk. The square and waterfront also offer pauses between the interiors.
