Why go
The abbey’s unusual setting is the reason to come: its medieval structures press against the cliff instead of standing on an open piazza. That close meeting of masonry and rock distinguishes it from Maiori’s town churches. The eastern coastal setting also gives the monastic complex a different scale from a church embedded in the centre.
What to look for
- A cave-side medieval monastic complex east of Maiori
- Monastic rooms against the cliff
Useful to know
- Check admission arrangements before travelling east from Maiori.
- Leave time to study the rock-side exterior if entry is unavailable.
