Grotta dello Smeraldo sea cave

This partly flooded cave at Conca dei Marini glows green when daylight enters through an underwater opening. The main reason to visit is the light on the water.

Grotta dello Smeraldo sea cave

Why go

The cave’s emerald color comes from sunlight passing through an opening below the waterline, a feature that is easy to miss from the outside. Inside, the flooded chamber and its rock formations show how sea water entered an older cave, making the short interior visit distinct from a coastal viewpoint.

What to look for

  • Sunlight entering below the waterline gives the cave water its emerald color.
  • The high cavern roof rises above a partly flooded chamber.
  • Stalagmites now stand in water that entered after the cave formed.

Useful to know

  • Visit in daylight to see the light effect that gives the grotto its name.
  • Check current access arrangements before traveling to the cave entrance on the coastal road.
