Getting to Assisi
Assisi's historic centre sits uphill from its railway station at Santa Maria degli Angeli. Plan the final ascent separately, whether you arrive by train or drive toward the town walls.
The station serves the lower settlement rather than the medieval streets most visitors come to walk. Rail travellers need to check a current connection uphill; drivers should head for public parking outside the historic centre. Deciding this last leg before arrival makes a short visit easier to use well.
Useful to know
By train, check the current rail route to Assisi station and the onward bus or taxi connection to the historic centre.
By car, follow signs for Assisi's public parking outside the walls; choose a lot near the part of town where you plan to start.
Allow time for the uphill transfer from Santa Maria degli Angeli before planning visits in the upper town.
