From the Assisi World / Stories
Rufinus of Assisi
Rufinus is Assisi's patron saint and the namesake of its cathedral. Tradition calls him the city's first bishop, although the date and details of his life remain uncertain.
The dedication of Assisi Cathedral makes more sense with Rufinus's story in mind. Tradition says he was martyred at Costano and that his remains were brought to Assisi. The Roman sarcophagus beneath the cathedral's main altar, carved with Selene and Endymion, connects an ancient object to later Christian devotion.
