From the Assisi World / Stories
Vitalis of Assisi
Vitalis was a Benedictine monk remembered for a poor, solitary life near Assisi. His story belongs to the area's hermit tradition rather than a central town sightseeing route.
Born in Bastia Umbra, Vitalis travelled as a pilgrim, became a monk at Subiaco and later lived at the hermitage of Santa Maria di Viole. His spare way of life offers a counterpoint to Assisi's monumental churches. The account is useful for understanding local devotion, even without a confirmed visitor stop.
