Mortaro Grande

Mortaro Grande is a large karst sinkhole on Mount Subasio’s signed Mortari walking circuit. Its unusual landform gives hikers a concrete geological feature to seek out in the open mountain landscape.

Why go

Mortaro Grande is a large karst hollow on Mount Subasio, where the ground itself explains the limestone geology of the mountain. Follow the signed Mortari circuit to see its bowl shape from a safe viewpoint, then compare the surrounding slopes with the very different stone streets below in Assisi. This is an exposed walking stop, not a town-centre monument.

What to look for

  • The large karst sinkhole on Mount Subasio is a striking geological stop on the signed Mortari walking circuit.
