From the Athens World / Itineraries
Greek Islands Beyond Athens
Compare Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos and Paros as separate onward journeys, using geography and trip style to choose one.
Why go
This is a planning collection, not a single-day route from Athens. Crete and Rhodes reward longer stays built around major historic landscapes; Santorini centers on the caldera; Corfu brings Venetian urban fabric and an Ionian setting; Mykonos and Paros combine Cycladic towns with beaches. Use the collection to choose an onward destination, then build transport and accommodation separately. Do not combine these stops into one itinerary or present them as nearby Athens attractions.
Useful to know
Keep the essential stops and drop optional ones when pace, weather or queues change.

World itinerary estimate: 270–480 min
Times are planning estimates. Unknown visit durations start at an editable 30 minutes; access is checked separately.
At Crete, minoan palaces, mountain landscapes and Venetian old towns require a trip planned independently of Athens. Heraklion and Chania offer different bases on Greece's largest island.
At Rhodes, rhodes Old Town preserves walls, gates and the Street of the Knights. Lindos combines an acropolis above a whitewashed settlement on the east coast.
At Santorini, the flooded volcanic caldera defines the cliff settlements of Fira and Oia. Akrotiri's buried Bronze Age town gives the island an archaeological counterpoint.
At Corfu, corfu Old Town layers Venetian fortifications, arcades and narrow lanes. The island's green interior and Ionian coastline demand more than an Athens day outing.
At Paros, parikia and Naousa provide contrasting harbor towns around the island. Marble villages, beaches and walking paths reward a stay rather than a rushed Athens detour.
