From the Atlanta World / Stories

Atlanta's Districts

Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead form distinct high-rise centers; smaller neighborhoods around them give visitors different ways to spend an afternoon.

Atlanta's Districts

Why go

Downtown groups the Capitol, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Sweet Auburn historic corridor. Midtown places the High Museum of Art near Piedmont Park and the Botanical Garden. Buckhead is farther north and better suited to a shopping-and-dining base than a short Downtown walk. Little Five Points and nearby Virginia-Highland offer a smaller-scale contrast to the central business districts.

What to look for

  • Downtown links civic landmarks with Centennial Olympic Park and Sweet Auburn.
  • Midtown combines major arts institutions with Piedmont Park.
  • Little Five Points and Virginia-Highland have a different street scale from the skylines.

Useful to know

  • Pick the district that holds your main stops, then add nearby neighborhoods.
  • Allow a separate transfer for Buckhead rather than treating it as part of Midtown.
