Sweet Auburn Historic District
A walk along Auburn Avenue through a former center of Atlanta's Black business, civic and religious life. Its historic streetscape rewards attention to the buildings as well as their stories.
Sweet Auburn puts Atlanta's African American history into a street-level setting: commercial blocks, churches and the Odd Fellows Building show different parts of a once-thriving community. Walking the district gives context to nearby civil rights landmarks without reducing the area to a single monument.
What to look for
The Odd Fellows Building marks a historic center of Black commerce.
Churches and commercial blocks stand along the Auburn Avenue streetscape.
Useful to know
Walk Auburn Avenue to understand the district as an area rather than a single point.
Treat building visits separately from the outdoor walk; each has its own access rules.
