Why go
This route uses the harbour crossing as the day’s opening chapter, then keeps the main stops close enough for an unrushed North Shore exploration. Begin in Devonport before climbing Takarunga for orientation. Continue to Maungauika for tunnels, defence history and a different harbour angle. Takapuna Beach is a separate final transfer rather than part of the walking loop, so add it only when weather and daylight reward time by the water. Protect the ferry return plan and shorten one summit if heat, wind or mobility makes both climbs excessive.
