The full story
Auckland occupies an active volcanic field made up of many separate eruption centres. The cones are not a decorative backdrop: Maungawhau and Maungakiekie preserve craters, terraces and long histories of settlement, while Pukekawa, Albert Park and other low landforms can be harder to recognise beneath the city. Rangitoto, the youngest and largest volcano in the field, dominates the eastern horizon. Water defines the other half of the landscape. Waitematā Harbour opens toward the Hauraki Gulf and carries ferries, sailing and port traffic; Manukau Harbour faces west through a narrower entrance and has broad tidal edges. Weather moves quickly across this exposed setting. A calm centre can coincide with strong wind on a summit or rougher conditions on the west coast. Build flexibility into outdoor days, carry a light rain layer, and keep museums or galleries available when cloud removes the payoff from a high viewpoint.
