Karekare Beach

A remote-feeling black-sand beach beneath the Waitākere Ranges, reached through a narrow valley and valued for dunes, surf and austere coastal scale.

Why go

Karekare feels wilder and less developed than Auckland’s better-known west-coast beaches. The approach emerges from dense forest onto dunes and a broad sweep of dark sand, with few distractions from the landscape. That isolation also means visitors must take surf hazards, track closures and limited services seriously.

What to look for

  • Tall dunes and dark sand create a stark transition from forest to ocean.
  • The wide shoreline offers long coastal views away from urban development.

Useful to know

  • Do not swim unless patrols and marked safe areas are clearly operating.
  • Check road and track access, then carry food, water and weather protection.
