Māngere Mountain / Te Pane o Mataoho
A major South Auckland Tūpuna Maunga with a broad crater, extensive archaeological terraces and views across Manukau Harbour and the surrounding volcanic field.
Te Pane o Mataoho is one of the clearest places to see how ancestral settlement reshaped an Auckland volcano. Terraces, pits and garden landscapes remain legible on the slopes, while the summit relates South Auckland to Manukau Harbour. Respectful walking and cultural context matter more here than simply reaching the highest point.
What to look for
Large terraces and storage pits reveal the scale of the ancestral settlement.
Summit views extend over Manukau Harbour, airport approaches and nearby cones.
Useful to know
Use formed paths, avoid the crater and respect all Tūpuna Maunga guidance.
Check for guided experiences or education-centre programmes before visiting.
