MOTAT
A two-site transport and technology museum where operational trams, aircraft, machinery and hands-on displays make industrial history accessible to families.
Why go
MOTAT works because many objects still move, sound or demonstrate their original purpose. The Great North Road site includes a historic pump house, trams and changing technology displays; the aviation hall holds a substantial aircraft collection. A heritage tram connects the sites, turning the transfer into part of the visit.
What to look for
A working heritage tram links the main museum with the aviation collection.
The restored pumphouse preserves machinery from Auckland’s early water-supply system.
Useful to know
Allow at least two hours and check tram operation before planning both sites.
Combine with Western Springs park or Auckland Zoo only if you are comfortable with a long, activity-heavy day.
