SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium
An indoor aquarium built partly below the Tāmaki Drive waterfront, known for its curved underwater tunnel, penguins and New Zealand marine conservation displays.
Why go
The attraction works especially well for families and wet-weather days, but its strongest material is distinctly local. Displays connect New Zealand waters with shark, ray, turtle and seahorse habitats, while the Antarctic area places king and gentoo penguins in a cold-climate setting. The original acrylic tunnel remains the memorable architectural device.
What to look for
A moving walkway passes beneath sharks and rays in the curved underwater tunnel.
The Antarctic zone brings visitors close to king and gentoo penguins.
Useful to know
Allow at least ninety minutes; rushing the tunnel and penguin area removes much of the value.
Reserve ahead during school holidays, then pair the aquarium with nearby Ōkahu Bay or Mission Bay.
