Why go
Hyde Park Theatre’s independent work differs from the productions at ZACH Theatre and the opera, symphony and ballet associated with the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Film adds another thread through Austin Film Society and the city’s production history. Start with your preferred art form, then choose a dated program.
The full story
The University of Texas at Austin’s Radio-Television-Film program helped connect the city to filmmaking. Productions associated with Austin range from Slacker and Dazed and Confused to Office Space and Spy Kids, showing how varied that screen identity became. These films offer cultural context, though a production credit alone does not establish a visitor location. The Austin Film Society converted airplane hangars at the former Mueller Airport into Austin Studios. That reuse links the city’s film industry to a changing urban landscape. Film festivals, including Austin Film Festival and South by Southwest, added another setting for screenings and discussion. Downtown’s Paramount Theatre opened in 1915 and became part of both stage and film history. Its architectural and cultural importance is separate from access to the building, so a historical mention should not determine an evening’s plans. Live performance also extends beyond that landmark: independent plays, producing theaters, orchestral music, opera and dance offer distinct experiences. Comparing the actual production makes a more useful choice than treating Austin’s performing arts as a single attraction.
Useful to know
- Choose the production first, then confirm its actual venue; a theater organization may present events elsewhere.
