Austin Zoo
Austin Zoo centers its animal visit on rescue and rehabilitation, giving families a reason to look beyond species lists and consider how the animals came into care.
The rescue mission distinguishes this zoo from a visit organized only around animal variety. Its residents include former exotic pets, retired animals and animals seized in cruelty cases. Habitats and keeper chats provide ways to connect that purpose with the animals, alongside a feeding area and picnic setting.
What to look for
The feeding area includes sheep, deer, goats, llamas and alpacas.
Keeper chats add interpretation to the animal habitats.
The site developed from a goat ranch into Good Day Ranch in 1990, then Austin Zoo in 1994.
Useful to know
Plan the zoo as a separate outing southwest of Austin, rather than a stop within a downtown walk.
Use the picnic grove to build a meal break into the animal visit.
