Littlefield Fountain

Look closely at Littlefield Fountain’s bronze figures at the university’s South Mall. The memorial’s layered history makes it more than a convenient foreground for a Tower photograph.

Why go

The fountain was dedicated in 1933 as a World War I memorial, but its patron’s earlier Confederate commemorative ambitions complicate that story. Its figures and setting reward a close look alongside an understanding of those origins. Treat the sculpture as its own stop; restoration currently affects the Tower behind it.

What to look for

  • Pompeo Coppini’s bronze fountain
  • South Mall setting
  • View south along University Avenue

Useful to know

  • Expect construction to affect Tower views; the observation deck is not part of this visit.
