Indigenous Australian bush food

Bush food refers to native ingredients and food knowledge developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Its sources and preparation vary by region, so no short list can stand for every community.

Why go

Learning a few examples changes how you read Australia's landscapes and menus. Kangaroo, native berries, fish and other foods came from different environments and were obtained with different skills. Look for explanations tied to a particular Country or community; that context matters more than treating an unfamiliar ingredient as a novelty.

The full story

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long used plants and animals available in their own regions for food. Inland and coastal environments offered different possibilities. The material here describes kangaroo, wallaby and emu among land animals, as well as berries, fruits and honey. It also describes fishing with spears, hooks and traps, showing that the subject is about knowledge and methods, not just ingredients. Food preparation varied too, and fire was one way to cook caught animals. Availability affected movement and settlement: some desert communities had to travel between food sources, while other districts supported more fixed patterns. That variety is why ‘bush food’ works as an introduction but can flatten distinct traditions if used carelessly. For visitors, the better question is where a named ingredient comes from and whose knowledge is being shared. Native foods may appear on contemporary menus, but a menu item alone cannot explain the cultural practices behind harvesting and preparing it.
