Arriving in Bali

Most international travelers enter through I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, while ferries connect Java and Lombok and fast boats serve nearby islands.

Arriving in Bali

Why go

Arrival planning affects the first day because Bali's main airport sits in the dense south, not in central Denpasar, and road congestion can make short transfers slow. Sea arrivals use different ports with different onward routes, so the right gateway depends on the next base rather than the island name alone.

The full story

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport lies between Kuta and Jimbaran in southern Bali. Its location is convenient for the Bukit Peninsula, Sanur and the western resort corridor, but a transfer to Ubud, the highlands or East Bali can take much longer when roads are busy. Confirm visa eligibility and the current arrival declaration through official Indonesian immigration channels before travel. International visitors should also check the Bali provincial tourist levy through the official Love Bali service and retain the payment confirmation when it applies. Requirements, exemptions and forms can change, so third-party summaries should not replace the official systems. Travelers coming overland from Java use the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry at Bali's western tip. From Lombok and the Gili islands, ferries and fast boats commonly reach Padangbai, although routes vary by operator and sea conditions. Sanur is a major departure point for Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Keep the first night geographically simple after a late flight or boat crossing. A cheap room saved far from the arrival point can create an exhausting transfer at the least useful moment.

Useful to know

  • Complete the current official arrival form and verify visa eligibility through Indonesian immigration before departure.
  • Pay any applicable Bali tourist levy only through the official Love Bali channel and retain its QR confirmation.
  • Check the current Nyepi date before booking an arrival, departure or island crossing.
