Why go
The island looks compact on a map, but volcanic terrain, narrow roads and congested southern corridors make distance a poor predictor of time. A regional plan improves every itinerary: combine Ubud with nearby inland sites, keep the Bukit together, and treat West or East Bali as dedicated days.
The full story
Private cars with drivers are common for full-day travel because they handle parking, route changes and one-way regional plans. Taxis and app-based rides are useful in many populated areas, though pickup rules and availability vary locally. Scooters offer flexibility but expose riders to dense traffic, uneven roads and weather; use one only with the correct license, experience and insurance. Public buses serve limited corridors and do not replace a full island network. Walking works within compact centers such as parts of Ubud, Sanur or Padangbai, yet pavements can disappear without warning. For offshore islands, fast boats connect Sanur or Padangbai with Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, and sea conditions can affect schedules. The most effective rule is geographic: plan fewer stops, keep them on the same side of the island and let road conditions decide the optional stop.
Useful to know
- Ask for the total driver price, included hours and parking arrangement before starting a day trip.
- Confirm the exact departure and arrival port for a boat, not only the island name on the booking.
- Do not connect a boat or cross-island drive directly to a flight without a generous buffer.
