Why go
Safety advice becomes useful when it follows the island's geography. Beaches require attention to flags and currents, scooters demand real road experience, cliff viewpoints need distance from edges, and crowded streets call for ordinary control of phones, bags and payment details.
The full story
On beaches, obey red flags and lifeguard instructions. Rip currents pull away from shore and are not defeated by swimming directly against them; if caught, stay calm, signal for help and move parallel to the beach when possible. Clifftop sites on Nusa Penida and the Bukit may have uneven paths or incomplete barriers, so step back from edges and avoid turning your back on breaking waves. Road risk is constant. Wear a helmet, do not ride without the correct license and experience, and assume cars or scooters may enter from any side. Secure phones and bags in traffic, especially when using a device near the road. At temples and wildlife sites, follow staff directions around macaques and do not display food. Save copies of travel documents separately, use official payment channels and contact your insurer promptly after theft, injury or a serious transport incident.
Useful to know
- Let beach flags, trail barriers and volcanic alerts override an itinerary or photo plan.
- Wear temple clothing as directed, keep offerings clear and accept ceremony-related closures.
- Keep valuables away from the road side of your body and secure phones in traffic.
