Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall

A domed Italian Renaissance and neoclassical hall anchors Dusit’s Royal Plaza, combining Carrara marble with murals that narrate the early Chakri reigns.

Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall

Why go

Even without confirmed public entry, the hall gives Dusit its strongest architectural focal point. Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti shaped a European ceremonial building for King Chulalongkorn, while Italian artists filled its domes with Thai dynastic history. Its later role as Thailand’s first parliament chamber adds political weight to the royal setting.

What to look for

  • A 49.5-metre central dome rises above six smaller domes.
  • Carrara marble shapes its Italian Renaissance and neoclassical exterior.
  • Murals by Galileo Chini and Carlo Riguli depict Chakri history.

The full story

King Chulalongkorn commissioned Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall as a new royal reception building after the completion of Amphorn Sathan Villa. Italian architects Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti designed the hall in Renaissance and neoclassical styles, using Carrara marble and other imported materials. A central dome rises above the two-storey structure, surrounded by six smaller domes that give the building its distinctive profile from the Royal Plaza. Inside, paintings by Galileo Chini and Carlo Riguli present episodes from the first six Chakri reigns, translating Thai dynastic history into a European monumental interior. The building later acquired another meaning during the 1932 revolution that ended absolute monarchy. It served as headquarters for the People’s Party and hosted the first National People’s Assembly before functioning as Parliament House until 1974. The hall therefore joins royal ceremony, imported architectural language and Thailand’s constitutional history in one landmark.

Useful to know

  • Plan this as an exterior architecture stop unless official information confirms public access.
  • View the central and smaller domes from the Royal Plaza before examining façade details.
  • Combine the exterior with Wat Benchamabophit and the wider Dusit civic landscape.
