Benchasiri Park

A compact Sukhumvit park built around an ornamental lake, with Thai contemporary sculpture and easy access from Phrom Phong’s dense shopping district.

Benchasiri Park

Why go

Benchasiri offers a quick change of scale in central Sukhumvit. Its lake, paths and twelve sculptures make it more than a patch of greenery, while its location beside major commercial blocks keeps the visit easy to combine. The sculpture collection gives the compact park a cultural focus alongside its lakeside paths.

What to look for

  • Follow the lake path to find twelve contemporary sculptures by Thai artists.
  • Look for the contrast between low garden views and Sukhumvit’s surrounding towers.
  • Read the park as a civic memorial to Queen Sirikit’s sixtieth birthday.

The full story

Benchasiri Park occupies land once used by the Bangkok Meteorological Department before that agency moved to Bang Na. Construction began in 1990, and the park opened to commemorate Queen Sirikit’s fifth-cycle, or sixtieth, birthday in 1992. Its design centers on an ornamental lake and integrates twelve works of contemporary sculpture by Thai artists. That art program gives a small urban garden a clear identity: the sculptures appear along a landscape used for walking, exercise and occasional open-air events rather than inside a formal gallery. The location also matters. Benchasiri sits directly on Sukhumvit Road beside the Emporium complex, where towers, traffic and commercial interiors dominate the streetscape. Entering the park produces an immediate shift to water, trees and open sky. A circuit of the lake is enough to understand the plan, but pausing at the sculptures reveals how the space combines royal commemoration, public recreation and contemporary Thai art.

Useful to know

  • Use BTS Phrom Phong; the park lies between Sukhumvit sois 22 and 24.
  • Visit early or late for cooler walking around the exposed lake.
  • Pair the park with nearby Sukhumvit stops rather than making a separate cross-city trip.
