Why go
Thonburi gives the east-bank monuments their missing context. King Taksin ruled from here after Ayutthaya’s fall, and Wat Arun stood within his royal landscape. Exploring the west bank shifts attention from ceremonial avenues to waterways, temple compounds and districts that were joined administratively to Bangkok only in 1971.
What to look for
- See Wat Arun, the dominant surviving landmark of the former Thonburi capital.
- Follow smaller canals still woven through Thonburi’s west-bank neighborhoods.
- View Thonburi’s historic west-bank position opposite Rattanakosin Island.
The full story
Thonburi grew on the west bank near the mouth of the Chao Phraya as an important garrison town during the Ayutthaya era. After Ayutthaya was destroyed in 1767, General Taksin recovered the region and made Thonburi the capital of his new kingdom. That period lasted until 1782, when Rama I founded a new royal center across the river on Rattanakosin Island. Thonburi remained a separate town and province for almost two centuries before being merged into Bangkok in 1971. Its later development differed from the east bank, where many old waterways disappeared under roads and dense construction. On the west side, numerous khlongs survived and continued to organize local movement and settlement. Wat Arun is the most visible reminder of the former royal capital, but the broader payoff lies in seeing how temple compounds, canals and riverside communities form a landscape distinct from Bangkok’s monumental civic core.
Useful to know
- Build the visit around one or two west-bank anchors rather than treating Thonburi as a single stop.
- Use Wat Arun and the Royal Barges museum to connect royal history with the river.
- Check individual boat, museum and temple access before crossing; the district itself has no shared timetable.
