Why go
Wachirabenchathat feels broader and more active than its neighboring parks. Its long circuit and open spaces suit cycling, walking and exercise, while the park’s railway-land history explains both its scale and its place within Chatuchak’s connected public green zone today.
What to look for
- Wachirabenchathat Park has a looping route for walking and cycling.
- The park transformed a former railway golf course into public space.
- A lake and broad open landscape distinguish it from neighboring parks.
The full story
Before becoming public parkland, this site was a golf course belonging to the State Railway of Thailand. It opened as a park in 2002 and was named Wachirabenchathat, though many Bangkok residents still know it as Suan Rot Fai, or Railway Park. Covering a larger area than the neighboring Chatuchak and Queen Sirikit parks, it developed a more active recreational identity. A winding circuit runs around the grounds, and the landscape includes a lake and facilities associated with exercise and family recreation. Its history remains visible in the generous scale of the land. Together with the adjacent parks, Wachirabenchathat shows how former railway property became one of northern Bangkok’s most important clusters of public green space. The open layout still distinguishes it from its garden-like neighbors.
Useful to know
- Check current bicycle rules and rental availability on arrival rather than assuming equipment will be offered.
- Share the circuit carefully with walkers, runners and cyclists.
- Combine it with neighboring parks only if you have time for the longer distances involved.
