Wat Arun

Across the Chao Phraya from Rattanakosin, Wat Arun centers on a porcelain-covered prang whose dense decoration and riverside setting reward close and distant views.

Wat Arun

Why go

The temple is Bangkok’s clearest architectural marker of the Thonburi bank. From across the river, the central prang organizes the skyline; up close, shells, glazed porcelain, guardian figures and tiered symbolism replace the simple silhouette. Its history also links the former Thonburi capital with the Emerald Buddha’s move to the Grand Palace.

What to look for

  • Wat Arun’s tall central prang is covered with shells and colored porcelain.
  • Chinese soldiers, animals and Indra on Erawan appear around the terraces.
  • Six Chinese-style granite pavilions stand along the river at Wat Arun.

The full story

A Buddhist temple occupied this site during the Ayutthaya period, when it was known as Wat Makok. King Taksin renamed it Wat Chaeng after making Thonburi his capital following Ayutthaya’s fall. The Emerald Buddha was once enshrined here before being transferred across the river to Wat Phra Kaew in 1785. Later kings restored and expanded the temple, and the distinctive central prang took shape in the early Bangkok period. Its decoration is what changes the experience on approach: fragments of colored porcelain and faience cover a structure that first appears pale and monumental from the river. The tiers carry Buddhist cosmological meanings, while figures of Indra, animals and guardians crowd the surfaces. Riverside pavilions add a quieter Chinese architectural note. The name links the temple to Aruna, the radiance of dawn, but the building rewards attention to material and symbolism in any light.

Useful to know

  • View the prang from the opposite bank before crossing so its full silhouette remains clear.
  • Walk the base slowly; the porcelain, shells and guardian figures are easy to lose in the overall scale.
  • Pair Wat Arun with one east-bank temple rather than compressing every Rattanakosin landmark into the same visit.
