Wat Benchamabophit

The Marble Temple in Dusit combines Italian Carrara stone with a precise Thai roofline, a royal Buddha image and a cloister of 52 varied figures.

Wat Benchamabophit

Why go

Wat Benchamabophit makes material and proportion the main attraction. Prince Naris used Carrara marble for pillars and courtyards without losing the layered roofs, gilded details and ceremonial focus of a royal Thai temple. The surrounding Buddha images then turn the cloister into a compact survey of poses and regional styles.

What to look for

  • Carrara marble shapes the pillars, courtyard paving and lion guardians.
  • Wat Benchamabophit’s cloister contains 52 Buddha images in varied styles.
  • Phra Buddhajinaraja stands above the ashes of King Chulalongkorn.

The full story

Construction began in 1899 after King Chulalongkorn established a palace nearby in Dusit. His half-brother Prince Naris designed the temple, bringing Italian Carrara marble into a building that still follows the high gables, stepped roofs and elaborate finials of Bangkok’s royal architecture. Marble pillars, courtyard surfaces and two large lion guardians give the exterior its cool, ordered character. Inside, lacquered and gilded crossbeams restore a warmer, more traditional palette. The principal Buddha, Phra Buddhajinaraja, is a Sukhothai-style image modeled after the celebrated Phra Buddha Chinnarat in Phitsanulok; King Chulalongkorn’s ashes are placed beneath it. Around the ordination hall, a cloister holds 52 Buddha images assembled under Prince Damrong Rajanubhab. Their varied mudras and regional forms make the gallery more than decoration: it becomes a comparative study of Buddhist sculpture within one carefully composed royal temple.

Useful to know

  • Compare the marble exterior with the lacquer-and-gold interior before circling the cloister.
  • Look at the Buddha images one by one; their different gestures are the point of the gallery.
  • Combine the temple with the civic and royal exteriors of Dusit District, and verify access before leaving.
