St. Nicholas Abbey
See a seventeenth-century plantation house, working rum distillery and gardens in St Peter. St Nicholas Abbey rewards time for both its architecture and the history of the estate.
St Nicholas Abbey brings several parts of a former sugar estate into one visit. The house dates to 1660 and retains Jacobean features rarely seen in the Caribbean. The distillery shows a later chapter of the property’s working life, while the gardens give room to step back and view the building. The site’s plantation history also calls for attention to the labour of enslaved people.
