Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor
The church crowns Tibidabo with a stone crypt, a rising upper basilica and city views. Its layered architecture gives the summit a reason to visit beyond the panorama.
Why go
The contrast between the fortress-like Romanesque forms below and the Gothic forms above makes the building readable as an upward journey. Enric Sagnier began the work and his son Josep Maria completed it across much of the twentieth century. The statue of the Sacred Heart marks the skyline from below; on the mountain, the terraces turn that distant landmark into a viewpoint over Barcelona and the Vallès.
What to look for
The lower crypt and upper basilica use contrasting Romanesque and Gothic forms.
A Sacred Heart statue crowns the summit-facing church.
Upper terraces look toward Barcelona and the Vallès.
Useful to know
See the crypt and upper church in sequence to understand the building's rising design.
Check the church's current access information if you want to reach the upper terraces.
Combine the church with the Tibidabo summit viewpoint.
