Why go
Architecture gives a walk between the old town and Murat quarter a clear purpose. Look at how the castle controls space, how churches sit within narrow streets, and how buildings such as Palazzo Mincuzzi and Palazzo Atti address broader urban settings. These contrasts are more revealing than collecting façades without context.
The full story
Bari Vecchia gathers churches and palaces built across several centuries within a dense network of narrow streets. Its enclosed character differs sharply from the planned city beyond the old walls. The distinction is spatial as well as historical: buildings are encountered at different distances and angles. At Castello Normanno-Svevo, square towers and a broad moat express the defensive purpose of the complex. Later alterations adapted it to new needs. Fortino Sant’Antonio provides another reminder that the seaward edge was a line of defence as well as a point of contact. Beyond the old town, Palazzo Mincuzzi, Palazzo Atti and Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese provide different examples of civic and commercial ambition. Compare their façades on an exterior walk, without assuming public access to the buildings. For a change of medium, the Pinacoteca brings painting into the architectural itinerary; check its visiting arrangements before building the day around it.
