Why go
Compare Renzo Piano's Fondation Beyeler in Riehen with Herzog & de Meuron's Schaulager in Münchenstein, or look at how older religious and civic buildings found new exhibition uses. Their different settings make architecture a reason to plan separate stops beyond central Basel; check each venue's access before travelling.
The full story
Museum architecture in and around Basel is a choice of experience, not just a backdrop. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen places modern art in galleries designed by Renzo Piano and connected to their landscaped setting. Schaulager in Münchenstein, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, takes a very different approach: its building serves a hybrid role between collection storage, research and public presentation. That institutional role affects what a visit can be, so check its current public programme before making the journey. The region also offers older fabric repurposed for display. A former monastery and Romanesque church at Schönthal hold contemporary-art exhibitions and sculpture, while Basel's Historical Museum occupies the former Barfüsser Church. The difference between these settings and a purpose-built gallery can change how you read the objects inside. Other designers associated with the region's museum buildings include Mario Botta, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. If buildings are the main attraction, plan around two contrasting examples and account for their different locations; if the collection matters more, let its subject determine the stop.
