Why go
Basel's central stops can be crowded and trams may approach quietly, including near Basel SBB, Marktplatz and Messeplatz. The Rhine is a working river with bridge supports and commercial boats, so a waterside walk and a swim call for very different levels of caution.
The full story
Basel's trams run through the same central spaces that visitors cross on foot. At Centralbahnplatz, Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz, Aeschenplatz and Messeplatz, several movements can meet at once. A tram can be quieter than expected, so watch the tracks even when you are focused on finding the right platform or crossing a street. Keep an eye on belongings when vehicles and stops are crowded. The Rhine needs a different kind of attention. Its current is strong, and bridge supports and freight boats create hazards that are easy to underestimate from the bank. The river should not be treated like a pool or crossed by swimming. If you intend to enter the water, seek current local guidance on suitable stretches and exits first. Strong swimmers still need to plan how they will leave the river and return along the bank.
Useful to know
- Pause and look for trams before crossing tracks, including at pedestrian crossings near the main stops.
- Keep valuables secure on crowded trams and buses and around busy interchange points.
- If considering a Rhine swim, check current local safety guidance and use established entry and exit points; avoid the water if you are not a strong swimmer.
