Why go
Augusta Raurica lets you read a Roman town on the ground instead of only through display cases. The theatre, reconstructed Roman house and archaeological finds show different scales of life, from public gathering to domestic rooms. The site's position near Augst also makes it a distinct outing from central Basel's museums.
What to look for
- The surviving Roman theatre
- The reconstructed Roman house
- Finds from the ancient settlement in the museum
The full story
Augusta Raurica developed near today's Augst and Kaiseraugst on the Rhine east of Basel. Roman settlement took shape in the Augustan era and grew into an important regional centre. The surviving remains are spread across a broad archaeological landscape, so no single room can convey the town's scale. Its theatre evokes public life; the reconstructed house gives a closer view of domestic space; finds in the museum add objects that once belonged to the settlement. Together they make the site's urban character easier to understand. The open-air setting is part of the experience, and it is also the main practical constraint: walking between remains and checking which indoor areas are available matter more here than at a compact museum. A single stop at the theatre gives only one slice of the ancient settlement; the house and finds make the contrast between public and private life clearer.
Useful to know
- Plan an outdoor circuit for the theatre and other remains, with weather-appropriate footwear and time between points.
- Check the museum galleries' current access separately from the open-air site and Roman house; parts can close independently.
