Why go
The river reaches the sea between Hondarribia and Hendaye, with Irun completing the bay's urban setting. That puts an international border beside habitat used by migrating birds. The Bidasoa interpretation centre connects the landscape with biodiversity, border history and long-distance travel, giving context to crossings and wetlands that might otherwise seem unrelated.
What to look for
- Islands and marshes interrupt the lower river's built-up border landscape.
- Txingudi wetlands provide feeding grounds and refuge for migratory birds.
- The Santiago Bridge links the river crossing with the Way of St James.
Useful to know
- Use Irun for a Plaiaundi wetland visit or Hondarribia for the river-mouth setting.
- Choose a specific bank or wetland access point before setting out; the Bidasoa extends far beyond Txingudi.
