The building joins two parts of Bermeo’s identity: a defended town and a fishing port. Its use as the Fishermen’s Museum gives the harbour walk an indoor focus, while the heavy structure makes the older residential and defensive role legible before you enter. The tower belonged to the family of poet Alonso de Ercilla.
What to look for
The tower has an unusual, irregular six-sided plan.
Dressed sandstone on the principal facade contrasts with rougher masonry elsewhere.
Useful to know
Look at the principal facade from Torrontero square before entering the museum.
Combine the tower with the old harbour below; the town hall is a separate building in the historic core.
