Why go
The reservoir works well for a day shaped around one activity: a shore outing, a longer ride or time watching birds. Its full circuit is a substantial undertaking, so a shorter visit benefits from a chosen starting area. The water also carries a history of a valley transformed by inundation.
What to look for
- Landa and Garaio recreation areas along the reservoir shore.
- Wetland birdwatching at Mendixur.
The full story
The reservoir was built in the mid-twentieth century and flooded much of the Gamboa valley. Settlements and farmland were affected, and residents lost homes and land. The broad water landscape therefore records a major change in how this part of Álava was inhabited and used. That history sits alongside a later ecological transformation. Wetlands and bird habitats developed around the reservoir, giving places such as Mendixur a different role from the recreation areas at Landa and Garaio. The shore is not one uniform park: different parts support walking, cycling, water activities or observation of wildlife. The perimeter route connects these landscapes, but its scale matters when planning. A full circuit offers a much broader encounter with the reservoir than a single shoreside stop. For a shorter outing, deciding between wetland observation and recreation gives the day a clearer focus than trying to cover the whole waterbody.
Useful to know
- Choose a land access point at Landa or Garaio; the reservoir’s map centre is not an entrance.
- The full circuit is 43.6 km and cyclable; choose a shorter section for a brief walk.
- Check the conditions for your chosen recreation area or water activity separately.
