Beckford’s Tower
Climb Beckford’s Tower on Lansdown Hill for a wide view over Bath, with exhibitions that examine the wealth and choices behind William Beckford’s retreat.
The 1827 tower was built as a private library and lookout at the end of Beckford’s garden route from Lansdown Crescent. A visit joins a physical climb to a fuller account of the man who commissioned it, including the wealth he drew from enslavement. The hilltop setting also makes the tower a distinct outing from Bath’s central streets.
What to look for
The gilded Belvedere opens a panorama over Bath.
Displays address Beckford’s life and wealth from enslavement.
The tower’s former library connects the lookout with its private origin.
