Queen Square
Queen Square is an open Georgian composition with an obelisk at its centre. It makes a brief, useful starting point for following Bath's planned streets uphill to the Circus.
The square shows John Wood the Elder's early approach to shaping whole urban spaces rather than individual houses. Its central obelisk and surrounding terraces make the geometry easy to grasp, while later changes to one side reveal that the ensemble grew over time. From here, Gay Street provides a clear continuation toward the Circus.
What to look for
An obelisk stands at the centre of the square.
Georgian terraces define the space around it.
Gay Street leads directly from the square toward the Circus.
Useful to know
Pause here before walking up Gay Street to see how the square and Circus relate.
Treat the surrounding buildings as exterior architecture unless a particular venue is open separately.
