Why go
A district-first plan makes the city's scale manageable. Dongcheng suits the Forbidden City and temple clusters, Xicheng links lakes and princely sites, Chaoyang holds parks and modern architecture, while Haidian and Shijingshan require deliberate western trips. It also separates the durable planning lesson from venue names, prices and schedules that need a fresh check close to travel.
The full story
Dongcheng contains the eastern half of the historic core, including the Palace Museum, Tian'anmen's eastern edge, Yonghe Temple and many hutong streets. Xicheng takes in Beihai, Shichahai, Prince Gong's Mansion, Niujie and major cultural institutions west of the old axis. Chaoyang stretches far beyond the compact center; the CBD and CCTV Headquarters occupy only one part of a district that also includes embassy neighborhoods and large parks. Haidian is associated with universities, technology districts and the Summer Palace, while Shijingshan reaches toward the Western Hills. These labels are useful for planning, but they are not small neighborhoods. Pick one or two strong anchors, then add nearby places. Treat cross-district combinations as transit days, not continuous walks, and check the exact entrance rather than navigating only to a district name.
Useful to know
- Build each day around one district cluster and one optional extension.
- Check the exact gate or entrance in Chinese before leaving; large compounds may have several widely separated approaches.
