Why go
Understanding the trade-off helps you decide when a hired car or driver adds real value. For the old city, rail and walking often beat private transport; for distant wall sections, road planning may matter more. It also separates the durable planning lesson from venue names, prices and schedules that need a fresh check close to travel.
The full story
Beijing's expressways and ring roads make the road network look simple at a distance, but the final approach can involve congestion, restricted turns, complex interchanges and scarce parking. Rules governing licenses, temporary permits, vehicle registration and traffic restrictions change and must be checked with an official authority before driving. Central attractions rarely reward bringing a car to the gate. A more practical pattern is to use public transport inside the city and reserve road travel for places with weak rail access, such as some Great Wall or tomb excursions. Even then, confirm the exact destination and return plan because different wall sections are separated by long mountain roads. If you hire a vehicle with a driver, agree on pickup points and waiting arrangements in writing. Do not assume a foreign license alone authorizes driving.
Useful to know
- Verify current license, permit and traffic-restriction rules with an official source.
- For central sightseeing, compare parking and congestion time with a subway-and-walk plan.
